Low Calorie Egg Rolls
If you're new to making egg rolls, you've come to the right place. Making homemade egg rolls got a lot easier and a lot healthier thanks to the air fryer. Instead of submerging your egg rolls into messy hot oil, you can pop them in the air fryer and achieve the same browned, crispy crust and juicy, hot center.
Without all of that heavy oil, air fryer pork egg rolls have fewer calories and less fat than traditional deep-fried preparation methods yet are just as hard to resist (similar to healthy air fryer pickles and air fryer cream cheese wontons). Ready to make fake-out take-out pork egg rolls in your air fryer? Let's do it!

Ingredients You'll Need

The savory flavors in egg rolls may seem elaborate, but they're pretty simple. Here's what you'll need to make these delicious homemade egg rolls:
- Cooking Oil: You'll need olive oil or avocado oil to cook the ground pork and prevent sticking.
- Ground Pork: Traditionally, egg rolls are made with ground pork. You can also use ground turkey and ground chicken for the same flavorful results with even less calorie.
- Garlic: Flavors the ground pork with deep, savory flavors.
- Sesame Oil: Sesame oil will give the filling its distinct fake out-take out flavor. This sesame oil is my absolute favorite!
- Coleslaw Mix & Shredded Carrots: You can also shred a head of cabbage yourself, but coleslaw mix is a huge time saver.
- Diced Green Onions: enriches the delicious flavors.
- Egg White: A light boat of egg white on each wrapper helps seal the wrapper closed and create a golden-brown, flakey outer layer.
- Egg Roll Wrappers: These are usually available in major-name grocery stores and Asian markets. They're usually in the produce section near the tofu.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cook pork and garlic. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Add the ground pork and minced garlic and cook until the pork begins to brown and is no longer pink (5 to 7 minutes). Drain and set aside.
Step 2: Cook vegetables. Add the sesame oil and heat over medium heat in the same skillet. Then, add the coleslaw mix, carrots, and green onions. Cook until the vegetables soften (3 to 5 minutes), and then add the pork-garlic mixture back into the skillet and stir.
Step 3: Assemble egg rolls. Place 3 tablespoons of the egg roll filling in the center of each wrapper. Seal the wrapper by folding the left and right sides over the filling. Then, roll upwards while tucking in the filling to form the egg roll. Brush the wrappers with egg whites and set them aside as you work through the remaining filling and wrappers.
Step 4: Cook egg rolls in the air fryer. Place the egg rolls in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving a small amount of space in between each (working in batches if necessary). Set the air fryer to 390 ℉ and cook until the rolls are brown and crispy (not burnt). Keep finished egg rolls warm as you work through the remaining batches. Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Don't get discouraged if your first few egg rolls aren't perfect. The rolling method can be tricky, but practice makes perfect.
- To make super crispy egg rolls in the air fryer, let your air fryer preheat and spray the basket generously with cooking spray before carefully placing the rolls in the hot basket.
- Not all air fryers function precisely the same, so keep an eye on the rolls, so they don't burn.
- If your filling to wrapper ratio is off, you can make an egg roll in a bowl. Serve a surplus of filling over a bowl of fluffy white rice or riced cauliflower.
Variations
- Spicy: Give your rolls a kick. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of sriracha and/or pinch red pepper flakes to the filling.
- Shrimp: Instead of pork, use baby shrimp or larger shrimp chopped into smaller pieces.
- Vegetarian: You can double up the veggies or replace the ground pork with your favorite veggie crumbles.
Storing & Freezing
Storing: After cooling, place egg rolls in an airtight container or resealable bag and refrigerate for 3 to 4 days.
To reheat: First, warm the egg rolls in the microwave and then re-crisp the wrapper by transferring the rolls to your preheated air fryer and cook until the wrappers are crispy again (2 to 3 minutes).
Freezing: After air frying and cooling down to room temperature, place egg rolls on a baking sheet and keep them in the freezer until the rolls are frozen solid. Then, place them in a freezer safe bag and keep them frozen for up to 6 months.
Recipe FAQ‘s

We can't forget about the sauce! Pork egg rolls are delightful dunked in sweet chili sauce, plum sauce, duck sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and spicy mustard.
