Red White and Jell-O Dessert – Low-Calorie, Low-Carb, Gluten-Free
If you are looking for a simple 4th of July dessert, look no further. This Red, White and Jell-O treat is low in calories and a crowd pleaser.
Happy Independence Day! Does anyone have any fun plans today? We will likely do some grilling since that it what we typically do on summer holidays. We also plan to get some sparklers and little fireworks for the kids too. I would love to spend more time outdoors, but it’s just so hot. It’s supposed to be 106 degrees today for a high, so not much fun being outside. The high temps is the main reason we like to cook outside, so we’re not heating up the house too much. This Jell-O dessert is also perfect because it’s light and chilled, so no cooking required. I love desserts that are no-bake and simple.
If you’ve made Jell-O desserts before, they are not difficult, they just take some time to set up. I make the Jell-O according the the package and then split it up between 4 cups. It takes several hours fr Jell-O to set up, but once it’s done it’s ready to go. Just top with whipped cream and your favorite fruit. I like to use strawberries and blueberries because they are in season and are festive for the holiday.
If you are going to serve this for an afternoon or evening treat, I recommend getting started first thing in the morning since Jell-O takes some time to chill and set up in the fridge. There are methods to expedite the chilling process, such as adding ice to the Jell-O mixture when preparing. All the information is right on the box.
I used the original Reddi-Whip for my dessert, but they also offer non-dairy options made with almond or coconut milk.
What are the benefits to eating gelatin?
Gelatin is made by boiling animal bones, cartilage, and skin to extract the collagen. When collagen is processed, it becomes a flavorless, colorless substance called gelatin. After gelatin cools, it has a jelly-like texture. Gelatin dissolves in hot water, which collagen does not do, making the texture practical to use in sauces, soups, and desserts. The health benefits of gelatin are similar to the benefits of collagen since gelatin contains the same amino acids.
Tip: If making these to serve for a party or gathering, they can be made in paper or plastic cups. This way you don’t have to worry about any of your dishes getting broken, especially if at an outdoor event.
