After shaping the dough into bagels, the fantastic air fryer takes care of the rest - cooking the dough into perfect bagels that are firm and toasted on the surface and tender and tangy throughout.
Just like that you'll have a freshly baked soft and chewy bagel. As for toppings and flavors, anything goes.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Only FOUR ingredients that you may already have.
- It is made with lighter, low calorie ingredients.
- Baking bagels in the air fryer is quick and easy.
- Makes the perfect portion for a quick, tasty breakfast or light afternoon snack.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Self Rising Flour: Self-rising flour has a raising agent added to it, so there isn't a need for baking soda or baking powder.
- Greek Yogurt: Adds moisture and elasticity to the dough and a pleasantly tangy flavor. The personal size plain Greek Chobani containers are the perfect portion for two bagels.
- Salt: Helps create soft, firm bagels and enhances the flavor.
- Egg White: Gives your spices and seasonings something to stick to and helps brown the exterior.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Make and knead bagel dough. Add flour and salt to a large mixing bowl. Stir in the yogurt using a fork until a crumbly dough forms. Then, transfer the dough to a sanitized, floured surface and knead until the dough is no longer sticky. Instead, it should feel tacky to the touch.
Step 2: Roll bagel dough. Divide the dough in half, then roll both halves into 1 inch thick ropes, connecting the ends to form a bagel shape.
Step 3: Season Brush the tops with beaten egg white and season with your choice of spices.
Step 4: Air fry fresh bagels. Place the bagels in the greased air fryer basket without overlapping. Set the air fryer to 280 ℉ and cook for 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool.

Expert Tips
- If you do not have self-rising flour, you can make your own by mixing ½ cup all-purpose flour, ¾ teaspoon baking powder, and ⅛ teaspoon salt.
- Spray the air fryer basket with a light layer of cooking spray to prevent the dough from sticking to the bottom of the basket.
- Arrange the bagels in a single layer without overlapping, so they cook evenly and brown on all sides.
- The precise time it takes to bake perfect bagels in your air fryer will vary based on the functionality of your equipment, so sneak a peek into the air fryer basket periodically and adjust the cooking time accordingly.
Variations
Savory: As for savory flavors, bagels are delightful topped with sea salt, sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion flakes, or poppy seeds -and then there's the ever-popular, everything bagel that includes all of the above in one tasty blend of spices.
Sweet: This recipe makes plain bagels, but when I'm craving a sweet bagel, I use blueberry Greek yogurt instead of plain and stir fresh blueberries directly into the dough. You can also add mini chocolate chips or raisins & cinnamon. To sweeten the dough itself, add a tablespoon of sugar to the mixture.
Cheese: Halfway through cooking, sprinkle freshly shredded cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella, or asiago over each bagel so it melts over the top.
Oven Baked Bagels
- Preheat the oven to 375 °F. Make sure it's fully preheated before you begin baking.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent the bagels from sticking.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the self-rising flour and salt. Stir in the plain Greek yogurt using a fork until the mixture forms a crumbly dough.
- Transfer the crumbly dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough until it is no longer sticky and feels tacky to the touch. This usually takes a few minutes of kneading.
- Divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll each portion into a rope about 1 inch thick. Connect the ends of each rope to form a bagel shape. Pinch the ends together to seal them.
- Brush the tops of the bagels with the beaten egg white. Sprinkle your choice of toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, etc.) on top of the egg white.
- Place the prepared bagels on the lined or greased baking sheet, making sure they have some space between them. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the bagels are golden brown and have a crisp exterior.
- Once the bagels are done baking, remove them from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Storing & Freezing
Storing: These bagels are best when they're freshly air-fried and cooled. Keep them in a paper bag on the counter if you have extras. Unfortunately, bagels begin to harden after a day or so.
Freezing: The size of your air fryer will limit how many you can cook at once, but if you plan to make a lot, you can freeze what you don't finish for later. Wrap individually sliced bagels in plastic wrap, then put in a freezer safe airtight bag and freeze for 2-3 months.
Reheating from frozen: Whenever you're craving a bagel, you can pop it right into the air fryer straight from the freezer. No thawing is necessary. Set the air fryer to 370 ℉ and "toast" for 6-8 minutes.
Recipe FAQ‘s
The precise calorie count will vary depending on the type of yogurt you use, but one plain air fried bagel is approximately 160 calories per bagel.
Yes! Place your bagel cut side facing up in the basket, and set the temperature to 310 ℉. Toast for 2-5 minutes or until it's browned to your liking.
The dough was tested in the air fryer, so I cannot say for sure, but you can try baking the bagels in the oven at 300 ℉ for 7-8 minutes.

Just made these. Not bad flavours and easy to put together. My fryer doesn’t go below 300 and found I had to cook them longer than the specified time. Nice flavour using the yogurt. Have you tried any flavoured yogurt? Also …why 5.3 ounces?
Erika
You can definitely use flavored yogurt if you want to make flavored bagels. 5.3 ounces is a personal sized yogurt which I find is a good amount for this recipe.

Anyone tried to veganize this recipe? Wondering if dairy free Greek yogurt will work.

Hi Becki, I haven't tried this recipe using a dairy-free Greek yogurt, but hopefully someone else has that can comment.
